The Rise of Asian Hate

What is asian hate?

Hate crimes include harassment, bullying, violence, or property damage where the offender is motivated by race, ethnicity, religion, gender, or disability. The Asian American and Pacific Islander group represents 50 ethnicities and over 100 different languages.

Statistics

  • 279 hate crimes were reported against Asians in 2020, compared to 161 in 2019, which is a 73% increase.

  •  Of all the hate crimes, Anti-Asian hate crimes ranked 8th among the most common motivators for hate crimes. These numbers are vastly underrepresented, since AAPI groups are the least likely to report hate crime

  • . During covid 19, there was a 35% increase in AAPI deaths compared to the 5 year average.

  •  57% of asian americans say they often feel unsafe in public because of their race or ethicity. 81 %of asian americans think violence against AAPI is increasing

Covid-19’s role

As shown by the statistics in the previous slide, Covid-19 led to an increase in asian hate. Asian American students have also witnessed or experienced bullying and/or harassment from classmates because of their race. Former president Donald Trump’s use of the term “Chinese virus” and the Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s use of the term “Wuhan Virus'' further caused the AAPI community to be blamed for the pandemic. Many Asian Americans have received unfair treatment, since others fear they might have Covid-19. However, the CDC states that Covid-19 cases were not higher among Asian Americans compared to other ethic groups.

Specific cases

  • In March 2021, eight Americans were killed, 6 of which were women of asian descent.

  • Brazil minister Abraham Weintraub tweeted that Covid-19 was part of China’s “plan for world domination”

  • In February 2020, a man assaulted a woman on a New York subway, calling her “diseased”, and claimed she was infected with Covid-19

These are just a few of the many examples of Covid-19 related asian hate.
