STOP USING DEFAMATORY LANGUAGE.

What is Defamatory language?

Defamatory is a term used to describe slanderous or libelous statements.  Defamatory language consists of content not only hurtful, but also completely false.  Most often, defamatory language targets the LGBTQ+ community and other historically discriminated groups such as women, people of colour, and disabled individuals. 

Stopping the use of Defamatory Language 

When using defamatory language against a group, it perpetuates discriminatory behaviours towards them.  Not only may the use of defamatory language increase someone's insecurities, defamatory language is extremely offensive and insensitive.  The use of defamatory language needs to be stopped. 

Know what you are saying and avoid contributing to Defamation towards others

“Homosexual”

  • This term was used by anti-gay exteremists to dinegrate gays or lesbians.  While the phrase “no homo” can be heard commonly while joking in a group of friends, it implies that being gay or lesbian is not welcome or accepted.  Using the term “gay” as an insult is also the same. 

“Tranny”

  • Extremely offensive slur used to refer to transgender individuals

“F*g/F*ggot”

  • Historically a term to discriminate against males that act in a “feminine” way.  It is used now as a direct insult to gay men. 

“B*tch”

  • Originally meaning a female dog, the term has expanded to characterize women.  Even if used towards a male, its usage reinforces sexism towards women. 

Terms to do with female genitals

  • This term is directed towards people the user feels are weak or expressive of their feelings.  The use of these terms are vulgar, offensive, and dehumanize females. 

“Ghetto”

  • Refers to the poor housing communities as a result of the disproportionate impact on people of color.  It is also used to describe one who is cheap, poor, or dangerous.  Using this term implies that people of colour must possess the qualities mentioned.

“Illegal Alien”

  • A term to call undocumented immigrants.  The usage of this term dehumanizes them while implying that their legal status is of most importance in their identity. 

Retarded

  • Used to mock those with mental disabilities

All racial slurs:

  • Mocks the culture and roots of an individual.  These slurs are used to discriminate, offend, dehumanize, and stereotype people.

Defamatory language is NOT limited to just these terms. Always be aware of what you are saying and apologize when unintentionally offending somebody. Defamatory Language is not simply insulting. Use of Defamatory Language are Attacks.
